Sketchbox Design

Situation

I founded and led Sketchbox Design, Inc. from 2005 through the early 2020s. What began as a graphic design and branding studio evolved alongside the internet itself, as businesses rapidly shifted toward digital presence, e-commerce, and web-based products. As the web matured, I continuously adapted the studio’s focus—embracing new technologies, interaction paradigms, and user expectations as they emerged.

Task

As founder and principal designer, I worked directly with clients to deeply understand their problem space, industry, and competitive landscape. My goal was always to uncover what made each organization distinct—and translate that into a cohesive, authentic brand and digital experience. The work typically began with brand identity:

  • Crafting logos and visual systems that conveyed tone, emotion, and trust
  • Establishing brand foundations that informed every downstream decision

From there, I designed and built digital experiences that reflected each brand’s personality—whether whimsical, professional, bold, calm, or expressive. When appropriate, I used motion and animation to bring interfaces to life and reinforce brand voice. As the industry transitioned away from Flash and toward open web standards, I embraced responsive design, accessibility, and usability, shifting my focus increasingly toward user experience design. I studied human-centered design and human–computer interaction as the discipline matured, ensuring that interfaces adapted to people—not the other way around.

Action

Over time, my role expanded beyond visual execution into full-spectrum product and experience design:

  • Led end-to-end design for brand, web, and early digital products
  • Adopted emerging web standards and responsive architectures early
  • Transitioned from purely visual design into UX strategy and interaction design
  • Built and shipped production websites and applications using modern front-end practices
  • Guided clients through digital transformation as the web evolved

This work required constant reinvention—technically, creatively, and strategically—and shaped my ability to anticipate industry shifts rather than react to them.

Result

Through Sketchbox Design, I delivered 150+ projects across a wide range of industries. Many of the websites and brands went on to win web design awards and became long-standing pillars within their respective markets. More importantly, this chapter established the foundation for everything that followed in my career:

  • Comfort operating in ambiguity
  • Strong instincts for emerging platforms and technologies
  • A human-centered approach grounded in real-world constraints
  • The ability to evolve alongside rapidly changing systems

While my focus has since shifted to full-time roles in startups and enterprise environments, Sketchbox represents my formative years as a designer and builder—learning how to adapt, anticipate what’s next, and deliver work that endures. From small businesses to startups to global platforms, this mindset has carried through every stage of my career. As Amazon says: “It’s still Day One.”
